Boasting in the Cross

From Pastor Eileen States
How does one begin to find good out of the death of someone on a cross? It was literally used as an instrument of torture and shame. Why do Christians all over the world pause each year around this time of Passover to remember and even celebrate the days leading up to the cross as well as the very death of an innocent man nearly 2000 years ago? It seems a bit ironic doesn’t it?
The apostle Paul says in Galatians 6:14 “As for me, God forbid that I should boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” What was so profound about Jesus’ death on the cross that would cause Paul to write this? The universe looked on as the most selfless act ever performed took place on that middle cross. God (pause for emphasis) was crucified that day giving hope to the world again. A lone man dying on a cross did more to restore man’s harmony with God, himself and his fellow man than any earthly power could have ever accomplished.
The death of Jesus on the cross removed the accusation that God was a dictator who cared nothing for a fallen world. The character of God was clearly revealed as a God of love, a God of mercy, a God of forgiveness. I shake my head in wonder that what looked like a complete failure at the moment is now seen as the greatest rescue plan operation ever.
And as I continue to shake my head in awe, I proudly boast that all who come to the cross in simple, trusting faith lose all their guilty stains and find peace with God.
Embrace the love of a God like that!
